HOPES

Health Centre

Role

Volunteers will work as an interdisciplinary team to care for clients from our target population by providing services within their scope of practice. Initially, due to low client volume, volunteers may also be asked to help organize supplies, assist at welcome/reception desk and to socialize with individuals in the waiting room.

Students in the Master of Health Administration program will act as the on site supervisors for the HOPES Health Centre.

Expectations

Volunteers are to act in a professional manner not only when volunteering for HOPES, but beyond HOPES in their daily lives.

  • Show up for volunteer shifts on time.

  • Refraining from swearing or using discriminating terms.

  • Have a non-judgemental approach.

  • Cancel shifts at least 48 hours in advance so the Volunteer Coordinator and Clinical Coordinators can fill the shift.

  • Be respectful to clients, fellow volunteers, preceptors, and any other individuals you are exposed to while volunteering.

  • Dress professionally or in line with the health professions standards (eg. scrubs if appropriate).

  • Do not provide services or care beyond the scope of student practice as outlined by your specific program.

  • Respect the confidentiality of the clients.

  • Comply with the policies and procedures of the organization.

  • Complete volunteer orientation and training.

  • Refrain from giving money to clients.

  • Ask for support when needed.

  • Report any incidents as soon as possible.

  • Provide feedback.

Commitment

Students are expected to volunteer for a minimum of four Sunday shifts over the course of an academic term.

Students are asked to arrive at Dalhousie Health Services for 1:00 pm. The first half hour will be used to prepare the clinic for opening as well as a group huddle to coordinate the afternoon.

Services will be offered from 1:30-4:00pm. Volunteer shifts will conclude at 4:30 after a thirty minute debrief and clean up.
