"The volunteer orientation position with HOPES is to recruit and provide orientation for student volunteers. Since this is a student-run health centre, the volunteers we recruit provide the care needed by the underserved population. Without volunteers, the health centre would close and without this service marginalized individuals may resort to “self-treatment,” causing themselves more harm. Additionally, individuals may leave life-threatening diseases untreated, which could be fatal. Two hundred and nineteen students expressed interest in our student-led initiative and we accepted one hundred and thirty students to volunteer with HOPES. Being surrounded by likeminded people all working towards a common goal, of providing comprehensive healthcare for marginalized individuals, is a rewarding experience and the future of HOPES looks promising."
